Binondo, the oldest Chinatown in the world, celebrated Lunar New Year’s Eve with fewer people this year, much like the previous year. The absence of dragon dances, bustling streets, firecrackers, and the sound of beating drums was still evident due to the COVID-19 protocols enforced by the city government of Manila.

Although some stores and restaurants remained open, and street vendors set up stalls to sell Chinese New Year delicacies, the festive atmosphere was not the same. However, this thousand-year-old tradition will persist.

Aside from prosperity and luck, may everyone learn to unite and find wisdom, especially about the decisions that will determine the fate of the country. As we welcome the Year of the Tiger, let us all strive for a brighter and safer future. Gong xi fa cai to everyone!
