In today’s world, where digital gaming and smartphones have become the norm, traditional toys have taken a backseat. Toys are now considered non-essential, especially during the ongoing pandemic. However, despite the decline in the popularity of traditional toys, there are still people who make a living by selling them. One such person is Tatay Theo, a 66-year-old toy peddler who roams the crowded areas along Roxas Boulevard in Manila.

Tatay Theo’s Journey

Tatay Theo hails from Batangas and moved to Manila in search of better opportunities, like many other people from the countryside. He tried his luck at various jobs in the past, including being a musician and a porter at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport. It was through his boss that he discovered the ease and profitability of selling toys. And he did it and continue to do so, he mentioned back then, his top seller is a musical yo-yo with beautiful lights!

Despite his age, Tatay Theo works long hours and also resells paintings to supplement his income. His resilience is truly admirable, especially considering the tragedies he has faced in his personal life. Tatay Theo lost his son in the past, and his wife passed away during the pandemic. Despite the hardships, Tatay Theo remains all smiles, approachable, and eager to show his wares.

The Significance of Traditional Toys

Traditional toys have been an important part of childhood for generations. They have played a crucial role in the physical, cognitive, and emotional development of children. They also promote social interaction and help children build friendships.

Supporting Tatay Theo

His attitude is truly admirable. He accommodated my short interview and thanked me afterwards without asking me to buy from him.

If you find yourself in the Manila Bay area, consider making Tatay Theo’s day by buying a toy or two from him. Supporting his business not only provides him with income but also make your child experience simple toys. It is a small gesture of appreciation for the dedication and hard work of toy peddlers like Tatay Theo, who continue to bring joy to people’s lives despite the challenges they face.
