In the last two years, the resilience of the country’s stagnant healthcare system was put to the ultimate test, particularly during the first year of the pandemic. The gravity of the situation emphasized the vital role of healthcare workers, rescuers, and other similar professions. Despite the daunting challenges of intense stress, insufficient compensation, and other issues, these dedicated individuals relentlessly carry out their duties to save lives to the best of their abilities.
The Silent Hero
One remarkable individual who embodies this selfless commitment is Sir Jaime, an EMS supervisor of the Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO). He and his team are just a fraction of the countless people working tirelessly to alleviate the overwhelming cases of Covid-19.
Hailing from Koronadal City in South Cotabato, Mindanao, Sir Jaime studied biology and volunteered straight to the Red Cross after college. His academic background in biology proved to be an invaluable asset in his role in various rescue agencies, including Makati Rescue and the Philippine Red Cross, for decades.
Risks and Challenges
Aside from his passion for his work, Sir Jaime also enjoys photography and walking around the city, sharing stories about the history of places, things, and life in general. However, due to the demanding nature of his job, he hardly has time for such leisure activities, not to mention the constant risk of virus exposure to him and his family.
When asked why he persists in his duties despite the risks and sacrifices, Sir Jaime humbly replied, “We do this because we love it, and it is our sworn duty, not because we seek to be hailed as heroes.”

Every individual in this world has a role to play, and fulfilling that role requires sacrifices. The least we can do is show kindness and appreciation for the hard work and dedication of these unsung heroes.
